Apps and websites for even more resources

- EARTH fm. This website is full of beautifully recorded soundscapes of nature. Sound recordists from all over the world have recorded the sound of forests, rivers, animals, birds and they are all available to stream, for free, on this website. They have organised them into categories, and have also designed some of them to be calming if you’re anxious.
- EARTH NOW. Brilliant website and app giving you real time stats from NASA satellites about the state of the earth. Like looking at its vital signs! Temperature, carbon dioxide, methane etc. Really brings it home.
- WINDY. This app is used by a lot of sailors and skiers; basically people who do outdoor sports. But it’s great if you’re just at home as well. It shows you the weather all over the world, the winds, the wildfires, air temperature, air pollution, ocean temperatures, snow cover, you name it; it’s on here. And it’s free.
- MERLIN BIRD ID. Want to know what that birdsong is? Merlin Bird ID has collected samples of birdsong from all over the world. Just record your bird and it will tell you what it thinks youre listening to. Provided by Cornell University Department of Ornithology.
- OLIO. If you need food and you can’t afford your next meal, check out what’s available on here. If you have food you don’t want, put it on this app and people will come and take it. If you can help out as a volunteer helping to distribute supermarket food on Olio get in touch with them. Not just food either.
- PICTURE THIS (£) If you’re on a walk and you want to identify a plant and find out all about it this is a very useful app. And it can tell you what to do if your plant is sick.
- CITYMAPPER. Want to get round a city easily? You could try Citymapper. You can find routes from anywhere to anywhere with your chosen method, walking, public transport, etc. And it will track your CO2 savings!
- PARKHIVE. developed by UWE a few years back, it’s a great app if you love walking with maps (which show you where you are in relation to your surroundings). Even though it was developed for Bristol, the map still works everywhere else in the country!
- CLIMATE KIDS. A website to help parents and children understand what’s happening to our climate (with questions like ‘what is the difference between weather and climate?’)
- INCIDECODER. Helps you check the ingredients in your cosmetics.
- THE CLIMATE GAME. Can you reach net zero by 2050? You can choose expert help along the way. See if you can do it!
- THE CLIMATE DICTIONARY. An everyday guide to climate change made by the United Nations Development Programe, under their Climate Promise project.
